NREL has been tracking the voluntary green power market since its inception in the 1990s. Our goal is to empower corporate purchasers, utilities, and renewable energy sellers by providing insights into available options and driving the renewable energy transition. Our annual “Status and Trends in the U.S. Voluntary Green Power Market” report, featuring 2023 data, is the industry’s leading resource for informed decision-making. Voluntary green power, as defined in this report, represents renewable energy purchased by retail electricity customers beyond what their utility is required to supply. This report is part of an ongoing series analyzing trends in the U.S. voluntary green power market. In 2022, approximately 9.6 million customers purchased around 272 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of voluntary green power. This volume accounted for roughly 38% of non-hydro renewable energy sales and 6% of total U.S. retail electricity sales. The majority of remaining renewable energy sales are attributed to compliance-based procurement by utilities to fulfill state renewable energy mandates.
