Powering our Future: The Role of Long Duration Energy Storage in Providing Grid Reliability
Tuesday, September 10, 2024
12:00 PM – 12:25 PM PT
Location: Storage Central Theater, Booth #50095, Hall B, ACC
"The need for long duration energy storage is becoming increasingly important as regions around the world replace fossil fuel generation with intermittent renewable energy. We’ve all heard the question: what happens when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine? The answer lies in energy storage. But as we see a larger share of renewable energy coming online, deploying storage beyond 4 hours will be crucial to ensure grid reliability. While short duration batteries are rapidly being deployed to meet current needs, we must also plan for essential future infrastructure today. The time is now to initiate more LDES projects and increase awareness and momentum for this essential infrastructure globally. The clean energy transformation will only be possible with the expedient deployment of diverse LDES technologies thatoffer unique characteristics for various applications, including Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage, Flow Batteries, and Pumped Hydro, among others. This session aims to cover key policies, projects, and evolving customer needs for transitioning to a clean and renewable energy supply. It will explore strategies for streamlined private/public engagement that enhances project execution.
