The transition to a decarbonized, digitally controlled, and more de-centralized grid will require novel methods and tools for grid planning and operations. These methods will not only maximize the capabilities of distributed energy resource (DER) technologies such as distributed solar photovoltaics and energy storage to provide value to the customers and grid reliability, but also address the challenges in asset management, business models, and scalability issues in the integration and operation of hundreds of thousands of DER devices. This panel, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO), will discuss strategies and highlight the latest innovations in system integration of distributed energy technologies, such as resilient community microgrids, grid-forming inverters, AI/ML applications, and virtual power plants (VPPs).
