Lithium battery recycling is essential to achieving the ambitious goals of the IRA and the Paris Agreement, but the current methods for recovering critical minerals from spent batteries create unsustainable amounts of carbon pollution and waste byproducts. In our quest to 'Electrify Everything' how can we also replace the polluting furnaces and intensive chemicals typical of battery recycling with clean electricity to create a low-carbon, circular supply of the critical minerals that will power an electrified future? This presentation will delve into the inner workings of the lithium battery recycling industry and processes, the expected impact on domestic supply needs as we scale battery manufacturing, and the need to develop truly circular recycling solutions that account for the full scope of emissions and waste.
