In the last few years, the German regulators have approved the “Netzbooster” (Grid Booster) as an innovative pilot program that provided authority to two transmission operators in Germany (TenneT and TransnetBW) to deploy battery energy storage projects to enable higher level of flows on constrained transmission lines. These projects are currently under construction. These large 200-300 MW+ BESS projects would provide significant relief for power transfers North to South of Germany. This use case has significant applicability in the US markets. For example, in NY a study looking at this application of storage has found that several substations in the NYISO market offered substantial benefits by relieving transmission congestion.
